Over three decades have passed since the original Doom redefined the FPS genre, yet its labyrinthine level design still manages to baffle modern players. While most veterans can breeze through “Hangar” with their eyes closed, a surprising percentage of the player base has never stepped foot in the elusive “M9” secret levels. These aren’t just hidden rooms tucked behind a discolored wall; these are entire maps accessible only via “secret exits” hidden in specific stages. From the classic Military Base to the punishingly difficult maps of Thy Flesh Consumed, finding these levels requires a mix of keen observation and mastery of Doom’s movement mechanics.

The Mystery of the Secret Exit

In Doom (1993), each episode contains exactly one secret level. To reach it, you must find a secondary exit switch or teleporter hidden within a standard level (usually map 3, 5, or 6). These secret exits are often guarded by complex puzzles or require “arch-vile jumps” (in later games) or precise platforming. Once you complete the secret level, the game usually spits you back out into the following standard map, often better equipped with early-game power weapons like the BFG-9000 or Plasma Rifle.

1. Episode 1: E1M9 – Military Base

This is the most famous secret level in gaming history, yet casual players often miss the entrance because it requires navigating a toxic pool that looks like a “death floor.”

How to Find It (E1M3: Toxin Refinery)

  • The Location: Near the end of E1M3, you’ll find a large room with a circular structure and a pool of toxic slime.
  • The Secret: Instead of heading to the normal exit, look for a secret door in the toxic area. You’ll find a switch that raises a bridge or opens a path to a separate room containing a glowing “Secret” exit teleporter.

Why It’s Special

Military Base is an arena-style map that forces you into a central courtyard where monsters spawn from all directions. It’s one of the best places to stock up on Rocket Launcher ammo early in the episode.

2. Episode 2: E2M9 – Fortress of Mystery

This level is a psychological trap. It is extremely short but incredibly dense with high-tier enemies. It’s a literal “boss rush” in a tiny space.

How to Find It (E2M5: Command Center)

  • The Location: Deep within the Command Center, there is a room filled with computer terminals and several teleporters.
  • The Puzzle: You need to find a hidden wall panel that looks like a computer screen but acts as a door. This leads to a long corridor that eventually reveals the secret exit sign.

Why It’s Worth It

It pits Barons of Hell against Cacodemons in a cramped arena. If you play it right, you can trigger “monster infighting” and watch the demons destroy each other while you save your ammo for the Cyberdemon later in the episode.

3. Episode 3: E3M9 – Warrens

Warrens is perhaps the most creative level in the original game. When you first enter, it looks identical to E3M1 (Hell Keep). Many players think the game has glitched and reloaded the first level—until they try to leave.

How to Find It (E3M6: Mt. Erebus)

  • The Location: Mt. Erebus is a wide-open, “sandbox” style map.
  • The Trick: You need to find the blue key and head to a small building in the corner of the map. Instead of taking the obvious path, you must perform a “run-jump” across the lava to a hidden ledge that leads to the secret exit.

Why It’s a Must-Play

After you “finish” the level and head toward the exit, the walls literally melt away, revealing a massive ambush and a transformed version of the map. It’s a masterclass in subverting player expectations.

4. Episode 4: E4M9 – Fear (Ultimate Doom)

Added in the Ultimate Doom expansion, Episode 4 (“Thy Flesh Consumed”) was designed for expert players. E4M9 is a claustrophobic nightmare filled with lava pits and hit-scan enemies.

How to Find It (E4M2: Perfect Hatred)

  • The Location: This is widely considered one of the hardest secret exits to find in the entire franchise.
  • The Method: At the very start of the level, you must drop down into the pit and find a hidden switch that lowers a platform near the initial spawn point. You have a very limited time window to get back up and reach the teleporter before the platform rises again.

Pro-Tips for Hidden Level Hunting

  1. Check the Automap: If you see a room on the map that has no obvious entrance, it’s likely a secret path.
  2. Look for Misaligned Textures: id Software often used slightly shifted textures to indicate a “secret” wall.
  3. Use the “IDDT” Cheat (If you’re stuck): If you are playing on PC and just want to see where the paths go, typing “IDDT” while the map is open will reveal every hidden line and item location.
