The 1.6 update for Stardew Valley introduced one of the most atmospheric and rewarding weather events in the game’s history: the Green Rain. Occurring randomly during the Summer, this “anomalous” event covers the valley in a translucent emerald hue, causing trees to transform and weeds to grow at an alarming rate. While the villagers might panic and retreat to the Stardrop Saloon, for an enterprising farmer, this is the most profitable day of the season. Beyond the visual spectacle, the Green Rain provides access to three specific “secret” items that are either impossible or extremely difficult to find during normal weather conditions.

1. Fiddlehead Ferns (From Type 3 Trees)

Before the 1.6 update, Fiddlehead Ferns were a rare commodity, found only in the Secret Woods during Summer or occasionally in the Prehistoric floors of the Skull Cavern. During the Green Rain, however, the valley sprouts “Type 3” Green Rain trees—tall, vine-like stalks that look like giant ferns.

How to Harvest Them

Unlike standard trees, these vine-like structures can be chopped down easily to yield a massive amount of Fiddlehead Ferns. While a single trip to the Secret Woods might net you 5 or 6 ferns, a single Green Rain event can provide 50 to 100 if you explore the Cindersap Forest and your farm thoroughly.

Why They are Essential

Fiddlehead Ferns are a “triple threat” item: they are required for the Chef’s Bundle in the Community Center, they are used to craft Moss Soup, and they are a high-value vegetable for pickling. Getting a stockpile of these in Year 1 is a game-changer for early-game progression and completionist runs.

2. Mossy Seeds (The Key to Permanent Alien Trees)

Most of the strange, mutated trees that appear during the Green Rain will vanish or revert to normal the very next day. This leaves many players wondering how they can keep the cool, “swamp-core” aesthetic on their farm year-round. The secret lies in the Mossy Seed.

Finding the Seed

Mossy Seeds have a chance to drop whenever you shake or chop down the mutated Green Rain trees (Type 1 and Type 2). They don’t always drop, so it is highly recommended to carry a high-tier axe and spend the day “clear-cutting” the temporary forests that spring up in Pelican Town and the Mountains.

Planting the Mystery

When you plant a Mossy Seed, it will grow into one of the three random Green Rain tree variants. These trees are permanent and will not disappear when the rain stops. They act as a constant source of Moss and can even be tapped to produce Fiddlehead Ferns throughout the year (except in Winter), allowing you to bypass the seasonal restrictions of the Secret Woods.

3. Moss (The “Hidden” Crafting Currency)

While you might see green “gunk” appearing on the trunks of trees during the rain, many players overlook Moss as a simple decorative element. In reality, Moss is a versatile new resource introduced in 1.6 that is required for some of the most powerful mid-to-late-game items.

Gathering in Bulk

During the Green Rain, Moss accumulates on almost every tree in the valley. Using a scythe or a sword to “shave” the trees is the fastest way to collect it. Because the Green Rain drastically accelerates Moss growth, this one day can provide enough material for several seasons of crafting.

High-Tier Crafting Uses

  • Treasure Totem: Requires 10 Moss. This item spawns a circle of dig spots around the player, perfect for hunting rare artifacts.
  • Statue of Blessings: A late-game mastery item that requires a staggering amount of Moss.
  • Speed-Gro & Mushroom Logs: Moss is a key ingredient in these utility items, making it essential for maximizing your farm’s efficiency.
