The conclusion of the Arkham trilogy is a somber, high-stakes finale that forces Batman into his most vulnerable position: unmasked and exposed to the world. After the defeat of Scarecrow, the game offers players a choice in how they want to end the Dark Knight’s journey. This choice is manifested through the Knightfall Protocol, a contingency plan designed for the moment Batman’s secret identity is no longer a secret. While the credits may roll after the main story, the “True Ending”—a haunting epilogue that has sparked years of fan debate—is reserved only for those who have truly cleansed the streets of Gotham.
Decoding the Knightfall Protocol
The Knightfall Protocol is Batman’s ultimate exit strategy. Following the events at the end of the main campaign, where Scarecrow reveals Bruce Wayne’s identity on live television, Batman realizes that the “Legend of the Bat” has been compromised. To protect his allies and ensure the safety of those he loves, he decides that Bruce Wayne must die so that something else can take his place.
Partial vs. Complete Knightfall
Depending on your progress in the side missions (Gotham’s Most Wanted), you can trigger two different versions of this protocol:
- The Partial Ending: This is unlocked by completing the main story and at least seven of the side mission chains. Batman returns to the Bat-Signal, unmasks, and flies the Batwing to Wayne Manor. As he enters, the mansion explodes. The game ends here with a monologue from Commissioner Gordon.
- The Full “True” Ending: This version is only available to those who achieve 100% completion. This means locking up every single villain in the GCPD, including the Riddler. This ending adds an extra cinematic epilogue that reveals the fate of Gotham without Bruce Wayne.
The Road to 100%: How to Unlock the Full Ending
Unlocking the true ending is widely considered one of the most grueling tasks in modern action gaming. It requires more than just beating the bosses; it requires a total mastery of Gotham’s secrets and mechanics.
The Riddler’s Challenge: 243 Collectibles
The primary obstacle for most players is Edward Nigma. To lock the Riddler behind bars and reach 100%, you must find all 243 Riddler Trophies, riddles, and breakable objects scattered across Bleake Island, Miagani Island, Founders’ Island, and the various interior locations.
To make this easier:
- Interrogate Informants: Look for the green-glowing thugs in the streets. Interrogating them reveals trophy locations on your map.
- Use the Batmobile: Many puzzles require the Batmobile’s winch or cannon to solve.
- Check Every Nook: Some trophies are hidden inside the GCPD, Panessa Studios, or the Stagg Airships.
Gotham’s Most Wanted: Apprehending Every Villain
In addition to the Riddler, you must complete every other side mission in the “Most Wanted” wheel. This includes:
- The Perfect Crime: Identifying the bodies left by Professor Pyg.
- Campaign for Disarmament: Deactivating all militia bombs in the city.
- Own the Roads: Destroying every militia checkpoint.
- Shadow Alliance: Tracking down the remains of the League of Assassins.
Note: DLC missions from the “Season of Infamy” do not count toward the base 100% completion required for the ending, though they add to your overall percentage.
Analyzing the “True” Ending Epilogue
If you have put in the work to lock up every villain, the Knightfall Protocol rewards you with a cinematic that takes place years after the “death” of Bruce Wayne. We see a Gotham that has fallen back into the hands of criminals who believe the Bat is gone.
The Death of Bruce Wayne?
The explosion at Wayne Manor was a calculated move. Most fans agree that Bruce and Alfred did not actually perish; instead, they faked their deaths to escape the public eye. As Batman tells Alfred before entering the house, “Ready the Knightfall Protocol… This is the only way to protect them.” By “dying,” Bruce protects the identities of Tim Drake, Dick Grayson, and Barbara Gordon, allowing them to lead normal lives.
The Nightmare Batman: Fear Toxin and the Future
The final scene of the game mirrors Batman’s origin. A family is being mugged in an alleyway, much like Thomas and Martha Wayne. The thugs laugh, mocking the memory of the “dead” Batman. Suddenly, a demonic, towering figure of a Bat appears on the rooftop. As the thugs look up in horror, the figure erupts into flames and bats, diving toward the screen as a creature of pure nightmare.
Is it the Real Batman? Fan Theories and Lore
The identity of the “Nightmare Batman” in the epilogue remains the most discussed topic in the Arkham community. There are three primary theories:
- The Bruce Wayne Theory: The most popular theory is that Bruce Wayne is still the Batman, but he has evolved. Deprived of his secret identity and his wealth, he now uses Scarecrow’s Fear Toxin to instill a literal, hallucinogenic terror in criminals. He is no longer a man in a suit; he is the “Ghost” of Gotham.
- The Azrael Theory: Depending on your choices in the “Heir to the Cowl” mission, some believe Azrael took up the mantle. However, the use of supernatural/fear-based elements doesn’t quite fit his established combat style.
- The Jason Todd / Tim Drake Theory: Some suggest the Red Hood or a new Robin stepped up, but the visuals of the final scene suggest a power level and a commitment to fear that only Bruce Wayne truly possesses.
